Mater Dei High School’s baseball squad etched a historic moment into Indiana sports lore on Saturday, securing the IHSAA Class 2A state championship with a 6‑3 victory over Bluffton that stretched to eight innings.
A Season Defined by Grit
The Wildcats appeared on the brink of defeat when they found themselves with two outs in the final frame, but a timely hit by Max Miller sparked a rally that turned the tide.
Moments later, Dylan Murphy delivered a two‑RBI single that sealed the win, while Darret Branson’s four‑inning relief effort shut down Bluffton’s offense, allowing just two hits and striking out six.
Coach Adam Wildeman praised the team’s resilience, noting that the players “found ways to win” throughout a season marked by tight contests and a never‑quit attitude.
The championship caps a run that saw the Wildcats win five of seven postseason games despite trailing in each, a testament to the experience they built after four previous title‑game appearances since their last crown in 1999.
Beyond the star names, contributions from Spencer Schiff, Jacob Caldemeyer, Jackson Schaefer, Griffin Morgan and Kyle Sokeland helped sustain the momentum, illustrating depth that proved crucial in high‑pressure moments.
