Matt Brunson, a longtime architect of football programs in Northwest Florida, was recently welcomed into the Florida High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame, a testament to a career that has shaped generations of players.
A career defined by excellence
Over three decades, Brunson compiled a 288‑85 record, guiding his teams to 22 state playoff appearances, 13 district titles and two state championships, including Baker School’s first state crown in 25 years in 2020.
More than a win‑collector
Colleagues and players alike point to his emphasis on discipline, character and mentorship, qualities that have left an imprint far beyond the scoreboard.
Roots in the game
Brunson’s own playing days at Baker School helped lead the Gators to three straight state championships from 1983 to 1985, and a national title at Troy State University in 1987 paved the way for his coaching journey.
His professional path has taken him through Baker High School, Vernon High School and Crestview High School, where he has overseen 14 Final Four runs and eight appearances in state championship games.
Community recognition
Okaloosa County Superintendent Marcus Chambers praised Brunson’s impact both on and off the field, while Baker School Principal Mike Martello highlighted the coach’s legacy of discipline, pride and excellence.
The induction not only celebrates past achievements but also signals continued influence as Brunson’s former pupils carry his values into their own endeavors.
