Matt Fink arrived at USC as a redshirt freshman in 2016, joining a program that would test his patience and perseverance over the next five seasons.
Though he never became the starter, he appeared in 16 games, throwing for 632 yards, five touchdowns and two rushing scores, while learning behind a succession of quarterbacks including Kedon Slovis and JT Daniels.
The Utah Turnaround
The turning point came on a crisp September afternoon in 2019, when starter Kedon Slovis left the game early against Utah with a shoulder injury. Fink stepped into the spotlight at the Coliseum, guiding the offense with 351 passing yards and three touchdowns, while limiting interceptions to a single turnover. The 30‑23 victory not only secured an upset over the tenth‑ranked Utes but also earned him the Jack Oakie ‘Rise and Shine’ Award for his poise under pressure.
From the Field to the Classroom
The following year, the COVID‑19 pandemic stripped Fink of a sixth year of eligibility, forcing a pivot toward academics. He enrolled in a master’s program, applying the same discipline that defined his clutch drives to his studies.
Today, Fink balances coursework with the focus honed on the gridiron, a transition that reflects a growing trend among student‑athletes who seek to leverage their platform for lifelong achievement.
