Matt Hobbs, the pitching coach for the University of Arkansas baseball program, has accepted an invitation to serve as an assistant coach for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. The selection represents a personal milestone that Hobbs has pursued since his early days in the sport.
During the summer, Hobbs will guide the national squad through a series of tryouts in Cary, North Carolina, followed by exhibition games that will take the team along the East Coast. The itinerary culminates with participation in the inaugural World Collegiate Baseball Championship in Taichung City, Taiwan.
Reflecting on the opportunity, Hobbs described the role as the pinnacle of his coaching aspirations. He noted that representing Team USA has always been at the top of his list of lifelong goals, and he feels honored to contribute to a program with such a storied legacy.
Hobbs' appointment is notable because the USA Baseball staff traditionally draws from college head coaches rather than assistant coaches. This summer, however, the team will be led by Illinois coach Dan Hartleb as manager, while Hobbs joins a staff that also includes Tracy Smith, Tom Walter, Jonathan Hernandez and Carlos Muñoz.
The coaching roster will be under the direction of Van Horn, Arkansas' current head coach, who has previously collaborated with Team USA on two occasions. Hobbs' own experience with USA Baseball dates back to a pitching coordinator role with an 18‑under team, giving him a foundation for this new responsibility.
A Milestone for Arkansas Baseball
Hobbs' journey from Wake Forest, where he served as Walter’s pitching coach from 2015 to 2018, to the University of Arkansas has positioned him as a key figure in the Razorbacks' pitching development. His elevation to a national staff underscores the growing influence of Arkansas baseball within the broader collegiate landscape.
