Matt McIlvane Named Assistant Coach of the Boston Bruins

The Boston Bruins announced today that Matt McIlvane will join their coaching staff as an assistant coach, bringing a wealth of international experience and a proven championship pedigree to the organization.

McIlvane’s recent résumé includes head coaching stints with the San Diego Gulls of the AHL and EC Red Bull Salzburg in Austria, where he guided both clubs to deep playoff runs and secured back‑to‑back league titles in 2022 and 2023. His success continued in Germany, where he captured three consecutive Deutsche Eishockey Liga championships with EHC München.

Beyond club triumphs, McIlvane contributed to Germany’s national program, earning a silver medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics as an assistant coach and later serving in the same capacity at the 2021 IIHF World Championship. His international résumé also features a stint as head coach of the German national team.

McIlvane’s playing background adds another layer of depth to his coaching perspective. He starred at Ohio State University from 2004 to 2008, later being selected by the Ottawa Senators in the eighth round of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. Though his professional playing career was brief, he logged 15 AHL appearances with Peoria and Binghamton, compiling six points.

General Manager Don Sweeney praised the addition, stating that McIlvane’s blend of playing experience, developmental coaching, and championship success will complement the Bruins’ existing staff and help nurture the team’s emerging talent. The move signals the Bruins’ commitment to integrating seasoned expertise into their player development pipeline.
