A New Chapter for RPI Hockey
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) has named Matt Nicholson as its new assistant coach for the men’s ice hockey program, a move that underscores the university’s ambition to rebuild a competitive roster in the coming seasons.
Nicholson arrives after a recent stint as an assistant at Bowling Green State University, where he contributed to a resurgence that placed the Falcons among the top tier of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.
His career includes a championship with Robert Morris University in the 2014 Atlantic Hockey Tournament, a victory that earned the Colonials an NCAA Tournament berth and highlighted his ability to translate regular‑season success into postseason contention.
Nicholson’s coaching journey also features head‑coaching roles in the North American Hockey League (NAHL), notably with the Amarillo Bulls from 2015 to 2017, and assistant positions at Niagara University and Mercyhurst University before his return to Robert Morris in 2021.
Coach Lang’s Endorsement
Eric Lang, RPI’s head coach, praised Nicholson’s track record, noting that his ability to elevate programs during transitional periods aligns perfectly with the Engineers’ current objectives.
Lang emphasized that Nicholson’s experience in developing talent and shaping competitive teams will be instrumental as the Engineers seek to sharpen their defensive structures and improve special‑teams efficiency.

With Nicholson on staff, RPI aims to build on recent improvements and contend for a higher conference standing in the upcoming season, leveraging his extensive network across the Northeast and Midwest to attract players who fit the program’s tactical identity.
