After a distinguished 23‑year tenure, Matt Richards has stepped down from his role as head coach of the Southern Maine Community College men’s basketball program, marking the end of an era that reshaped the school’s athletic identity.
During his time at SMCC, Richards guided the SeaWolves to a national championship and amassed more than 400 career victories, a milestone that places him among the most successful coaches in Division II history.
A Champion’s Legacy
The team captured six Yankee Small College Conference titles under his guidance and earned a spot in more than a dozen national tournaments, culminating in a championship victory in 2022. Last season the squad finished 24‑7, secured the league tournament as the No. 4 seed, and posted a 13‑game winning streak — the longest in the program’s three‑decade history.
Beyond the wins, Richards cultivated a culture of resilience and community engagement, turning the basketball program into a rallying point for students, alumni, and residents across Maine.
A New Chapter
While relinquishing the day‑to‑day coaching duties, Richards will remain at SMCC in a newly created position as chief of institutional advancement and engagement, where he will leverage his deep institutional knowledge to foster partnerships and expand the college’s outreach initiatives.
College officials praised Richards’ decision to stay within the university ecosystem, noting that his vision for growth aligns with the administration’s strategic goals. “Matt’s impact extends far beyond the hardwood,” a senior administrator said in a statement. “His leadership will be instrumental as we chart the next phase of our institutional development.”
