Coastal Carolina announced that veteran coach Matt Schilling will remain part of the program, taking on the role of Director of Defense, Baserunning and Gameplay.
Schilling, a Coastal Carolina alumnus who played for the Chanticleers in the mid‑1990s, has spent more than two decades in various capacities within the program, rising from assistant coach to a pivotal figure in the team’s championship eras.
His influence is most visible on the defensive side, where his units have repeatedly ranked among the nation’s best in turning double plays, and his baserunning schemes have helped the team manufacture extra bases in high‑pressure moments.
A multifaceted legacy
Beyond the field, Schilling will continue to direct the Chanticleer Baseball Camps and draw on his 12‑year stint as senior director of on‑field instruction at Baseball Factory, as well as his three seasons scouting for the Atlanta Braves.
Athletic director Chris Lemonis praised Schilling’s blend of playing experience, coaching acumen and player development, saying the move secures continuity for a program that captured a school‑record 56 wins in 2025 and reached the College World Series championship final.
