The team’s attack produced ten goals, the most ever in a single World Cup for the side, before a 4‑1 loss to Belgium ended the run.
Beyond the short‑term results, the new contract expands Pochettino’s remit to shape the entire player development pipeline, from youth academies to coaching education, ensuring a coherent pathway toward future tournaments such as the 2028 Copa America and the Gold Cup cycles in 2027 and 2029.
Looking Ahead to 2030
Pochettino, who previously guided Tottenham Hotspur to its first Champions League final and captured a Ligue 1 title with Paris Saint‑Germain, elected to remain with the U.S. setup rather than pursue European club offers, citing a desire to build something lasting on home soil.
U.S. Soccer CEO J.T. Batson hailed the decision as a “clear signal of commitment” to long‑term objectives, including winning men’s World Cups and growing participation across the country. Part of the financial package is reportedly funded by Citadel CEO Ken Griffin, underscoring private‑sector investment in the program.
The coach also outlined a vision that prioritizes younger talent and early‑stage expectations, aiming to narrow the gap between the U.S. and the world’s elite.
