Colorado Mesa University’s football program is poised for a stronger 2025 campaign, with Coach Miles Kochevar emphasizing a return to physical play and cohesion after a modest 6‑5 finish last year.
A New Era of Physicality
Kochevar, now in his second season as head coach, believes the Mavericks must embrace a more aggressive, hard‑hitting style if they hope to climb the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) standings.
The team returns the bulk of its offensive firepower, including standout receivers Calem Grimble and Cooper Mumford, while defensive coordinator Hunter Hughes adds depth to a scheme that helped the line allow the fewest sacks in the conference last season.
Despite losing their top two running backs, the Mavericks are confident that the remaining roster can sustain momentum, especially after a schedule that opens at home against Minnesota State on Aug. 27.
Last season the squad posted a 6‑5 overall record and a 5‑4 mark in RMAC play, but three of those four conference defeats came at the hands of teams that eventually advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
Coach Kochevar highlighted the importance of teamwork, noting that the offensive line’s low sack total and the defense’s ability to limit points per game were bright spots that can be built upon.
The non‑conference slate also includes a matchup against Colorado State University Pueblo, a rival that finished just outside the playoff picture last year, adding another layer of competition for the Mavericks.
With a blend of experienced veterans and promising newcomers, the program aims to translate its offseason work into tangible results on the field, hoping to finish the year above .500 and secure a stronger conference position.
