Max Weir has been appointed head baseball coach at the University of Massachusetts, ushering in a new chapter for the Minutemen program. The announcement was made by Director of Athletics Ryan Bamford, who cited Weir's deep ties to the university and his proven ability to develop talent as key factors in the decision.
A Return to Roots
Weir first joined the UMass staff as a volunteer assistant during the 2022‑23 season, later returning as an assistant coach for the 2025 campaign before stepping into the top role. His journey includes stints as associate head coach at Nichols College in 2024, head coach of the Eagles Baseball Club in Easthampton, and a season with the Boston Red Sox on the Fan and Youth Engagement team, where he helped organize community events across New England.
Prior to his latest appointment, Weir served as a co‑head coach alongside Brandon Shileikis during the 2026 season. Bamford noted that the move back to a single head coach model reflects a strategic direction aimed at providing clear leadership and continuity for the program.
Looking Ahead
Weir expressed gratitude for the opportunity, stating his excitement to build on the foundation laid by previous staff and to guide the Minutemen toward competitive success. He emphasized a commitment to player development, academic excellence, and community engagement, drawing on his experience both on the field and in public outreach.
The university community anticipates that Weir's blend of technical expertise and relational approach will revitalize the program, fostering a culture of growth and achievement. As the team prepares for the upcoming season, all eyes will be on the new coaching era that promises fresh energy and ambition for UMass baseball.
