Joseph Frias has taken the reins of the Mayfield Trojans football program as the team enters the 2026 season, inheriting a squad that has endured four consecutive losing campaigns and finished last year 2‑9, placing sixth in their district before exiting in the first round of the 6A playoffs.
Frias arrives after a successful stint at Chaparral, where he guided the team to a playoff appearance in 2024 and a 4A semifinal run in 2025, earning a reputation for discipline, toughness and consistency.
The Trojans will field 11 returning starters, including five on offense and six on defense, and will operate a balanced spread offense paired with a 3‑4 defensive scheme.
A fresh start for Mayfield football
At the heart of the new philosophy is a focus on doing the little things right every day, building a championship culture through accountability, preparation and relentless effort throughout the year.
Mayfield’s rich history includes eight state titles, seven of which were captured between 1995 and 2010, and the program hopes to add a new chapter by competing for championships in the coming years.
The coaching staff features assistants Stephen White as defensive coordinator, David Butler working with defensive backs, John Damin as co‑offensive coordinator, and Reese Martinez, Chris Ordonez, Eric Vierra and David Talavera rounding out the unit.
The 2026 schedule includes district matchups against Los Lunas, Organ Mountain, Las Cruces, Gadsden, Chaparral, Deming, Alamogordo, Goddard, Roswell and Artesia, providing a tough road ahead.
