The McGuinness boys soccer team clinched the Class 5A state championship on Friday, defeating Tulsa-Edison Prep 2-0. The win marked the first title for the program since 2007 and completed an unbeaten postseason that saw the squad win all four playoff matches without conceding a goal.
Coach Paulo Lopez praised the team's cohesion, noting that trust among players and strict adherence to the game plan were decisive factors in their success.
Scoring came from Nick Pitman, who opened the account in the first half, and Beckett Crandle, who added the second goal after the break. The defense, anchored by a disciplined back line, preserved a clean sheet throughout the tournament.
The championship adds to a storied legacy, as the program also captured titles in 2003 and 2007, reinforcing its reputation as a perennial contender in Oklahoma high school soccer.
Other title matches saw Heritage Hall fall 3-2 to Sallisaw after David Griffin converted a penalty for the losing side, while Mount St. Mary lost 4-1 to Crooked Oak despite a solitary strike from Carlos Gutierez that briefly leveled the contest.
Mount St. Mary had advanced to the final with a 3-2 semifinal victory over Casady, but could not replicate that performance against Crooked Oak.
