A Coach's Perspective
Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire insists that the Red Raiders’ football program is operating under a veneer of normalcy, even as the Brendan Sorsby gambling saga continues to generate headlines.
In recent remarks, McGuire highlighted the unwavering assistance he has received from university leadership and the booster community, noting that the school’s commitment has kept the team’s daily routines intact.
He also defended Sorsby, the former Cincinnati Bearcats standout who transferred to Lubbock on a lucrative name, image and likeness agreement, pointing out that the player has been allowed to remain on the roster after confessing to betting on Indiana games.
Sorsby’s legal battle with the NCAA culminated in a suspension for gambling violations, prompting him to abandon his appeal and turn his focus toward the upcoming NFL draft, while still training in the Dallas area and retaining access to Texas Tech’s facilities.
McGuire, who has spoken openly about his own encounters with addiction, stressed the importance of sustained support for Sorsby, arguing that the quarterback’s personal struggles deserve compassion as much as athletic evaluation.
The coach’s stance reflects a broader philosophy: protecting his players’ wellbeing while navigating the pressures of modern college athletics, a balance he says will define the program’s resilience moving forward.
