The McPherson Bullpups boys soccer program is gearing up for the 2026 season with a sense of optimism that stretches beyond the familiar rhythm of preseason practices.
Coach Chris Adrian, now in his 17th year at the helm, returns eight of the eleven starters from a squad that finished 10‑9 a year ago and fought its way to the 4‑1A State Quarterfinals.
Key Returners and Their Impact
Among the veterans, Yahir Valadez stands out as the leading scorer from 2025, having netted 12 goals while also dishing out 10 assists. Jackson Martin, a senior midfielder, contributed nine goals and four assists, while sophomore forward Parker Riemann added five goals to the attack.
Defender Grayson Broadus brings senior experience and five assists from the back line, and the defensive corps also features Mason Eisenbarth and Dima Peters, both of whom are expected to anchor the rearguard.
The offensive front will miss the graduating trio of Manny Morales, Gabe Standfast and Daniel Bowen, who combined for a substantial share of last season’s points. Adrian acknowledges the void but believes the remaining roster can step up and that surprises may emerge from unexpected sources.
A Challenging Schedule Begins at Home
The Bullpups open the campaign against 5A Great Bend at 6:30 p.m. on their home field at McPherson High School Stadium. The match marks the first of what Adrian describes as one of the toughest regular‑season schedules among 4A schools, a slate that includes contests against traditional powerhouses and regional rivals.
Beyond the opener, the team will travel to face Rose Hill, the eventual state champions from the previous year, a reminder of the level of competition that awaits. The schedule also features a mix of home and away fixtures that will test the squad’s depth and resilience.
Freshmen Miguel Alonzo, Leo Gaspar Mendez and Malachi Griggs are slated to see early playing time, offering a glimpse of youthful energy that could prove decisive as the season unfolds.
With a blend of seasoned veterans, promising newcomers and a demanding calendar, the 2026 Bullpups are poised to turn early challenges into opportunities for growth. Coach Adrian’s vision hinges on harnessing the team’s physicality, fostering cohesion among the returning starters, and allowing emerging talent to make their mark.
