The Medfield girls’ soccer team is gearing up for another shot at the Division 3 crown after finishing the previous season with a 22‑1 record and a title‑game victory over Nipmuc. The preseason agenda centers on reinforcing the chemistry that helped the squad dominate a year ago.
Junior midfielder Lyla Manning says the team’s motivation is rooted in collective effort, noting that positive energy on the field fuels harder work and tighter bonds. “When we feel good about each other, we push each other to be better,” she explained.
Coach Lohan’s Vision
Coach Melinda Lohan, a two‑time Globe Coach of the Year, returns after guiding Medfield to back‑to‑back title games with a 58‑6‑4 overall record. Lohan stresses unity and resilience, aiming to prevent any slip‑ups that could derail the championship hopes.
Senior forward Sidney Heavey, the 2023 Globe Athlete of the Year, comes back after a breakout season in which she netted 24 goals and added 14 assists. Her mother, former U.S. star Kristine Lilly, holds the record for most international caps (354) in women’s soccer, a legacy Heavey hopes to emulate.
Alongside Heavey, senior attackers Devon Weafer and Lyla Manning each posted 28 goals last year, while Audrey Grandinetti contributed significantly. The trio is transitioning to Division 1 programs, adding external pressure but also confidence in the team’s depth.
