Melkart Abou Jaoude, a defensive lineman for the University of North Carolina, has been selected for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy Preseason Watch List, an annual honor that highlights the nation’s top defensive player in college football.
During the 2025 season he recorded 10.5 sacks, ranking fifth nationally and topping the ACC, while his 646 defensive snaps set a new Tar Heels history mark for a lineman.
His performance peaked in a 27‑10 victory over Syracuse, where he logged six tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble, earning ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week honors.
The Road to the 2026 Bronko Nagurski Trophy
The award’s finalists will be announced on November 19 by the Football Writers Association of America and the Charlotte Touchdown Club, with the winner to be presented at the Bronko Nagurski Awards Banquet in Charlotte on December 7.
The trophy itself commemorates Bronislaw 'Bronko' Nagurski, a legendary two‑way player from the University of Minnesota whose career helped shape modern college football.
Looking ahead, the Tar Heels are slated to open the 2026 season against TCU in Dublin, Ireland, at Aviva Stadium on August 29, marking a historic start to the campaign.
