A new memorial fund launched by Central Michigan University alumni and supporters aims to erect a bronze statue that will forever commemorate the late baseball coach Dave Keilitz.
Keilitz, who died on July 15, 2026 at the age of 83, left an indelible mark on the Chippewas program, guiding the team from 1971 to 1984 with a 456‑203 record and securing four Mid‑American Conference titles and six NCAA tournament berths.
The coach who shaped a generation
During his 14‑year tenure as head coach, Keilitz mentored dozens of players who would go on to professional careers, including notable alumni such as Rich Maloney and Jordan Bischel. His ethical approach to the game earned him admiration from peers and athletes alike.
In 1984 he transitioned to the role of Director of Athletics, overseeing all university sports for a decade before assuming leadership of the American Baseball Coaches Association from 1994 to 2014, a period that culminated in his induction into the ABCA Hall of Fame in 1989.
A lasting tribute in bronze
Sculptor J. Brett Grill, celebrated for his realistic sports figures, has been commissioned to bring Keilitz’s likeness to life. Grill plans to capture the coach’s distinctive posture and the spirit that defined his leadership on and off the field.
The memorial fund, seeded by alumni gifts and a major pledge from the American Baseball Coaches Association, will also establish the Dave & Sue Keilitz Family Endowment to support future CMU baseball programs, ensuring that the coach’s influence endures beyond the statue.
Voices from the past
Former CMU head coach Jordan Bischel and Ball State mentor Rich Maloney have publicly praised Keilitz’s mentorship, describing him as a moral compass for the sport and a builder of character in every player he coached.
Perk Weisenburger and Kevin Tapani, among more than 20 former players, contributed personal pledges during a celebration of Keilitz’s life, underscoring the deep connections he forged throughout his career.
The statue will be installed on the CMU campus, serving as a permanent reminder of the values of integrity, dedication, and community that defined Dave Keilitz’s legacy.
