Memphis Tigers head coach Charles Huff recently opened up about the program’s financial roadmap as the team prepares for a pivotal season, shedding light on how the $7 million budget is being spent and what that means for the upcoming campaign.
Budget Allocation and Retention
Huff revealed that roughly $5 million of the current $7 million allocation is earmarked for retaining players from last year’s roster, a strategy he says is essential for maintaining continuity and performance.
An additional $2 million has been set aside for the transfer portal, but the coach noted that most of the revenue‑share contracts for this season had to be backloaded, limiting the amount of cash that could be offered up front.
Selling a Vision and Building Relationships
Because of the backloaded structure, Huff had to recruit new talent without being able to guarantee large immediate payments, forcing the staff to focus on selling the program’s vision and forging personal connections with prospects.
According to Huff, the ability to articulate a clear future for the Tigers and to build genuine relationships with recruits has become a cornerstone of the team’s approach, especially when financial incentives are constrained.
He drew parallels to his earlier stints at Vanderbilt, where he learned to “do more with less,” and at Penn State, where he experienced “more with more,” underscoring how each environment demanded a different tactical mindset.
Looking ahead, Huff expects the budget to climb to around $10 million next season, a prospect that could ease some of the current pressures but also brings new challenges in managing expectations and resource distribution.
