Rising Stars of Memphis High School Football
The Commercial Appeal’s annual survey of the Memphis region’s top high school football wide receivers has become a rite of fall, and the 2026 edition is no exception. With the season still months away, the newspaper’s rankings already spark conversation among coaches, recruiters and fans alike.
At the top of the list stands Tae Walden Jr., a four‑star prospect who emerged as the area’s leading returning receiver. His blend of size, speed and route precision has kept him at the center of recruiting conversations, and his performance last season set a high bar for his peers.
Close behind is Lawrence Britt, a four‑star recruit who has already committed to Missouri. Ranked No. 13 statewide, Britt’s combination of athleticism and polished hands has made him a favorite among SEC programs.
Pierce Washington, another four‑star talent, occupies the No. 11 spot in Tennessee’s 2028 class. Though still early in his development, Washington’s physicality and sure‑handedness have already drawn attention from a handful of Power Five schools.
The depth of talent extends beyond the headline names. Seniors such as Tavarco Jackson, who holds offers from Liberty, Western Kentucky and Southern Miss, and Layquan Armour, courting Henderson State and Arkansas Baptist, illustrate the breadth of opportunity in the metro area.
Defensive standout Kylan Simmons, a sophomore, earned All‑Metro honors as a freshman, hinting at a dual‑threat potential that could reshape his team’s offensive schemes.
Other notable seniors include Robbie Patton, the Warriors’ top receiver from last season, and Carlos Edwards, who ranked second among the Golden Wildcats’ receivers. Kam Davis contributed 18 catches for 297 yards and two touchdowns, while junior Connor Brown is already fielding offers from Memphis and Murray State.
