A New Era for Mercer Football
Mercer University is set to headline the 2026 FCS Kickoff on August 29, bringing the Bears to Five Star Stadium for a nationally televised showdown that marks the first time in ten years the event will be staged outside Montgomery, Alabama.
The Bears will meet the East Texas A&M Lions at 7 p.m., a matchup that promises fresh storylines as the program welcomes its 22nd head coach, Joel Taylor, who previously served as the team’s defensive coordinator from 2020 to 2023 and led West Georgia to a 12‑win stretch in his first two Division I seasons.
Game Day Details
Taylor’s appointment on December 11, 2025, culminates a rapid rise that saw him transition from assistant to head coach, and his debut will be watched closely by fans eager to see how his defensive philosophy translates to the larger stage.
Gates open at 6 p.m., and attendees must adhere to a clear bag policy designed for safety and efficient entry; the university will also celebrate Teacher Appreciation Night, gifting the first 100 educators a commemorative T‑shirt and a raffle entry.
Concert and Fan Experience
Pre‑game festivities begin at 11 a.m. on Black Field, where a free Ford Football Concert Series will kick off with rising country star Micah Fletcher at 4 p.m., followed by a performance from Nashville songwriter Conner Smith at 5 p.m., while a beer garden and inflatable kid zone offer additional entertainment.
At 4:45 p.m., the Bear Walk will wind through campus as the football team, band and cheerleaders march toward Five Star Stadium, building momentum ahead of kickoff.
With the stage set, the university hopes the combination of on‑field action and off‑field celebration will draw a broad audience and reinforce Mercer’s growing presence in college football.
