A coordinated disinformation hub
Meta has taken down a network of 39 Facebook pages that were disseminating false health rumors about National Hockey League stars, a move that underscores the platform’s growing vigilance against fabricated medical narratives.
The pages, which collectively amassed roughly 245,000 followers, were traced to administrators operating out of Vietnam and were timed to coincide with the heightened attention surrounding the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Their content alleged that several former and current players had been stricken with stage‑IV glioblastoma, a claim that was not only unsubstantiated but also contradicted known medical histories, such as Mario Lemieux’s documented battle with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in the early 1990s.
Other ex‑players were said to have undergone treatment for skin cancer, while a post falsely declared that Sidney Crosby, an active star for the Pittsburgh Penguins, had been diagnosed with cancer; similarly, a posthumous claim about Stan Mikita, who died in 2018, was debunked by his family.
The misinformation also extended to assertions that Toronto Maple Leafs forwards Auston Matthews and William Nylander, Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid, and others had personally covered hospital expenses for cancer‑stricken fans, claims that were refuted by the individuals involved.
Investigators noted the pages employed unnatural English phrasing, occasional homoglyphs and a style reminiscent of automated generation, a pattern also identified by Agence France‑Presse in a parallel disinformation effort targeting baseball enthusiasts.
Meta’s enforcement team removed the pages for breaching its policies on false health information, and the company confirmed that similar disinformation campaigns had been identified in other domains, including a set of 13 pages spreading fabricated political narratives in Australia.
The episode illustrates how bad actors can weaponize the popularity of sports icons to generate traffic, monetize false narratives and evade detection, prompting platforms to sharpen their detection tools and policy frameworks.
