A cooperative solution emerges
The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) voted last week to sanction an emergency cooperative agreement that permits Gull Lake High School’s varsity football roster to continue competing under the Parchment Panthers banner for the 2026 campaign.
Gull Lake’s Board of Trustees gave the green light to the arrangement two days before the start of the season, a move driven by mounting concerns among players about personal safety and the ability to field a competitive team.
The decision follows the cancellation of Gull Lake’s varsity schedule after a series of assault allegations surfaced during a June football camp in Oceana County. Michigan State Police and Gull Lake Community Schools are still investigating those complaints.
While the varsity program will sit out the season, the junior varsity squad remains untouched and will play as scheduled, ensuring that younger athletes keep their on‑field experience.
Under the co‑op, the displaced players will travel with the Panthers, practice alongside their new teammates and take part in all regular‑season contests, preserving their competitive opportunities despite the upheaval.
Investigations continue
Authorities have emphasized that the cooperative arrangement does not halt the ongoing inquiries. Both the school district and state police are pursuing leads, and any further developments could influence the program’s future.
For now, the partnership offers a pragmatic pathway for student‑athletes to stay engaged in the sport they love while the broader safety concerns are addressed.
