Miami Hurricanes brace for catcher transition as Sosa ponders pro draft

A look at the team's depth and pitching overhaul ahead of the upcoming season

The Miami Hurricanes baseball program is gearing up for a pivotal transition as star catcher Alex Sosa weighs a professional contract against a return to college for his senior year.

Sosa was selected by the Athletics with the 172nd overall pick after a breakout season in which he batted .338 and posted a 1.119 OPS, setting new career highs across the board. He now has until July 27 to decide whether to sign the deal or rejoin the Hurricanes for another campaign.

A deep catching corps emerges

Behind Sosa, the team boasts a trio of capable backstops. Freshman Alonzo Alvarez impressed with a .341 average and a .990 OPS, earning consideration for ACC Defensive Player of the Year, while transfer Jose Lopez III, a Miami native ranked 28th among high‑school catchers by Perfect Game, is slated for a backup role after posting a .248 average and a .761 OPS at GCU. Adding to the mix, incoming freshman Devin Diaz, a New York product who hit .408 with a 1.181 OPS in his senior year, will have the chance to learn from veteran Alvarez in a Power Four conference.

The Hurricanes have also overhauled their pitching staff, bringing in nine transfers to bolster the rotation. Among them is right‑hander Blake Morningstar, who will join a staff that already features veteran arms and fresh talent.

With a blend of seasoned veterans and promising newcomers, the club aims to maintain its competitive edge in the ACC and beyond as the new season approaches.
