Micah Nori has been appointed the new head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, bringing a unique blend of collegiate baseball experience and NBA coaching acumen to the role.
Nori’s journey began on the diamond at Indiana University, where he played as a pitcher from 1994 to 1997. After graduation he returned to Bloomington in 2005 for a brief stint as a hitting coach before transitioning fully into basketball.
His professional coaching career has spanned multiple NBA franchises, including stints as an assistant with the Toronto Raptors, Sacramento Kings, Denver Nuggets and Detroit Pistons. Most recently, he served as the lead assistant for the Minnesota Timberwolves for five seasons, a period that culminated in his promotion to head coach of the Trail Blazers.
The hiring follows a wave of Indiana‑linked moves in the league. Dusty May, another former Indiana University men’s basketball manager, was recently named head coach of the Dallas Mavericks, underscoring the university’s growing influence on NBA leadership.
Adding to the network, Mike Woodson, a longtime Indiana University associate, currently serves as associate head coach of the Sacramento Kings, further tying the Hoosiers to the NBA’s coaching carousel.
Nori’s appointment is expected to reshape the Blazers’ culture, emphasizing player development and a disciplined defensive identity. Analysts suggest that his background in player mentorship could accelerate the growth of Portland’s young core.
