The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) has appointed Michael Bazemore as its new Director of Athletics, effective July 19. He will report to Tanya Pont, Vice Chancellor for Advancement and Athletics, who highlighted his proven record in elevating athletic programs while championing student‑athlete well‑being.
A strategic appointment
Bazemore arrives after a five‑year tenure as Director of Athletics at Montana State University Billings, where he supervised 14 NCAA Division II varsity sports and guided the department to a 3.2 collective GPA. His leadership was marked by a graduation rate exceeding 85% among eligible student‑athletes.
Beyond administrative duties, Bazemore has been a vocal advocate for the holistic development of student‑athletes, emphasizing mental health, academic support, and community engagement. He previously served in academic and membership affairs at the NCAA’s Indianapolis headquarters, gaining deep insight into national governance.
His career also includes leadership roles at Metropolitan State University, Truman State University, and the University of Sioux Falls, where he honed skills in facility planning and fundraising. Bazemore holds a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University and a master’s in sport, recreation, and fitness management from MSU Billings.
Under his stewardship at MSUB, the athletic department underwent notable facility upgrades, including enhancements to the soccer complex and the primary basketball‑volleyball gymnasium, which are expected to benefit UAA’s growing programs.
