A Legend Returns to the Field
Michael Jerome Brooks, a Ruston native who once dazzled as a high school football champion, later cemented his place in Louisiana sports history as a 10‑year NFL veteran and inductee of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, returned to his roots this week to host his inaugural youth football camp at Lincoln Preparatory School.
The three‑day camp gathered dozens of eager youngsters from across the region, where Brooks and his fellow alumni — Dalton Hilliard, Rueben Randle and Booger McFarland — shared stories from their professional careers, demonstrating drills, 7‑on‑7 scrimmages and the discipline required to thrive at the highest level.
Beyond the X’s and O’s, the sessions stressed the importance of punctuality, teamwork and academic achievement, echoing Brooks’ own mantra that a strong foundation in education is as vital as any playbook.
Building Foundations On and Off the Gridiron
Participants were encouraged to observe, ask questions and absorb lessons from every coach and peer, a philosophy Brooks attributes to the guidance he received from his late parents, Louise and Oscar, whose values continue to shape his mentorship approach.
The event also highlighted Ruston’s reputation for excellence, a community where athletics and academics coexist, and where multiple sports programs have repeatedly competed in Louisiana High School Athletic Association championships.

As the camp drew to a close, Brooks expressed optimism that the lessons learned would ripple outward, fostering a new generation of athletes who value hard work, respect and lifelong learning, while the participating organizations — including the Louisiana High School Athletic Association and the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame — pledged continued support for youth development initiatives.
