Michael Claybrooks has been announced as the new boys basketball coach at McGavock High School, taking over a program that finished the previous season with just one win.
A Coach With Deep Roots
A 1999 graduate of Hillsboro High School, Claybrooks is the nephew of longtime Metro coaching legend Maurice Fitzgerald, a connection that has shaped his basketball pedigree.
From Assistant to Architect
He spent a decade on the staff at Christ Presbyterian Academy, where he also led the middle school program and later coordinated the Mookie Betts Travel Club, emphasizing advanced skill development.
Prior to that, he served as an assistant at University School of Nashville, further honing his ability to blend strategy with player growth.
A Program Seeking Revival
At McGavock, he inherits a squad that posted a 1-19 record the prior year, a stark contrast to the school’s storied past that includes a Class AAA state championship in 1976.
A Turnover of Leadership
The program has seen four different head coaches in the last four seasons, with Bryson Randolph, Russell Acklin and Howard Johnson each lasting a single year before stepping down.
Looking Forward
Claybrooks says he is eager to restore the Eagles’ tradition, rebuild from the ground up and give the community a reason to cheer again.
