Michael Lowman, a name that resonates through the baseball circuits of North Carolina, is set to appear on the Salisbury‑Rowan Hall of Fame ballot for the first time in 2027, a testament to a career that has spanned decades of coaching, playing, and community leadership.
A Coach’s Ascent
The accolade follows a string of professional milestones, including his recognition as the 2021 National Assistant Coach of the Year and his pivotal role in guiding Catawba College’s baseball program to multiple World Series appearances under head coach Jim Gantt.
Early Roots in Rowan County
Lowman’s journey began on the sandlots of East Rowan, where as a short‑statured but tenacious athlete he starred in both basketball and baseball, hitting .392 in his final American Legion season and earning Area 3 Player of the Year honors in 1998.
Collegiate Success at High Point
At the collegiate level, Lowman donned the Panthers’ uniform at High Point University, becoming a four‑year starter at second base, batting .336 in 2000, and earning All‑Big South first‑team honors in 2001; his most memorable moment came when he launched a grand slam against Appalachian State University in 2002.
Legacy in the American Legion
Guided by his father, Bob Lowman, a longtime manager for the Rowan Legion team, Michael honed fundamentals that would later define his coaching philosophy, while mentorship from Jeff Safrit sharpened his skills as a shortstop and hitter. His professional trajectory also includes a head‑coaching stint with the South Rowan American Legion squad, which captured the Southern Division of Area 3 in 2010, and a tenure as a graduate assistant at High Point University, where he contributed to the program’s development alongside Jim DeHart.
Beyond the diamond, Lowman remains a pillar in Rowan County, celebrated for his statistical leadership — ranking among the all‑time greats in hits, runs and RBIs for the Rowan Legion — and for his ongoing influence on young athletes who aspire to follow his dual path of competition and mentorship.
