A Milestone for a Young Pitcher
Michael Rodriguez, a former standout at West Broward High School, has earned a spot in the inaugural HBCU Swingman Classic, a showcase slated for Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.
Roots in Pembroke Pines
Rodriguez moved to Pembroke Pines at age ten, where he played Little League and later excelled at West Broward High before joining Bethune‑Cookman University, the university he now represents.
The Swingman Classic, founded by MLB Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr., gathers 50 of the nation’s top Division I prospects, offering underrepresented programs a national stage to display their abilities.
Rodriguez will be joined by five of his Bethune‑Cookman teammates and four athletes from Florida A&M University, all eager to catch the eye of scouts and fans alike.
“I’m thrilled to represent Bethune‑Cookman and step onto the same field as the player who inspired me growing up,” Rodriguez said, adding that he has been refining his hitting and fielding ahead of the event.
A Platform for Underrepresented Talent
Beyond individual exposure, the showcase aims to shine a light on HBCU baseball programs, encouraging future generations to consider these institutions as viable pathways to professional play.
With the eyes of the baseball world turning toward Philadelphia, Rodriguez and his peers hope this moment will open doors to future opportunities, both on and off the diamond.
