The University of Michigan’s men’s basketball program is set to welcome Dylan Murphy to its coaching staff as an assistant, a move first reported by local sports outlets.
A G League pedigree joins the Wolverines
Murphy, who most recently guided the Osceola Magic of the NBA G League for three seasons, arrives with a résumé that includes two Eastern Conference championships and a Coach of the Month honor in March 2025.
His stint with the Magic followed a four‑year tenure as an assistant with the Orlando Magic, where he transitioned from a basketball operations analyst role to the bench.
Before that, Murphy honed his skills as a scout for the Atlanta Hawks during the 2016‑17 season and spent a year as a graduate assistant at Ball State, where he helped the team to a league title in his debut year.
Coach Mike Boynton Jr. described the recruitment as part of a "work in progress," emphasizing that the new hires will strengthen the program’s depth and support the team’s recruiting ambitions.
Boynton also noted that Murphy’s arrival follows the earlier addition of Mike Martin, another veteran assistant with a 14‑year head‑coaching pedigree at Brown University.
The Wolverines hope to leverage Murphy’s G League connections and proven ability to develop talent to boost in‑state recruiting and elevate the program’s competitive edge.
Murphy’s accolades include a Coach of the Month award in March 2025 and the distinction of leading the Osceola Magic to back‑to‑back first‑place finishes in the Eastern Conference.
