A new sport takes root in Michigan schools
The Michigan High School Athletic Association announced last school year that field hockey would become an official sponsored sport, marking a significant expansion of the state's high school athletics landscape.
Teams have naturally clustered around three key regions: Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids, and Oakland County. These areas have embraced the fast‑paced, stick‑and‑ball game, creating a vibrant pipeline of talent and competition.
In the inaugural season, Ann Arbor Pioneer emerged as champions, capturing the first MHSAA field hockey title and setting a high bar for newcomers.
Community outreach fuels growth
To build on that momentum, Great Lakes Regional Field Hockey, a nonprofit dedicated to expanding participation, is hosting a free festival at The Hawk Community Center on July 30.
The event will showcase scrimmages across age groups, offering elementary, middle school, and high school players a chance to experience game‑like situations in a supportive environment.
In addition to the scrimmages, the festival will host consolation and championship matches for the organization’s high school league, giving teams a taste of competitive play beyond the regular season.
Organizers say the festival is part of a broader effort to introduce the sport to new communities, provide coaching resources, and create pathways for youth to stay involved in field hockey.
