A homecoming for a hometown hero
Jake Guarnera, a former standout at Ponte Vedra High School and now an offensive lineman for the Michigan Wolverines, returned to his roots this weekend to run his first youth football camp on the very fields where he once honed his craft.
The three‑day event attracted roughly 80 children between the ages of six and fourteen, who gathered under the summer sun to learn the fundamentals of the game from Guarnera himself, his former high‑school teammates, and current Michigan wide receiver Jaime Ffrench.
Guarnera emphasized the importance of giving back to the community that shaped him, stating that the camp was as much about character development as it was about technique. The curriculum focused on basic skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship, creating a positive environment for the youngsters.
All proceeds from the camp were earmarked for the Special Forces Trust, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting U.S. special‑operations personnel and their families. The partnership underscores a growing trend of athletes leveraging their platforms for charitable causes.
Former Ponte Vedra alumni such as running back Brian Case and Utes player Ryker Kemp praised the initiative, with Case noting his happiness in sharing his own experiences with the next generation and Kemp admitting that the camp reignited his love for the sport.
The camp not only provided a platform for skill development but also reinforced the bond between local athletes and the broader community, illustrating how sport can be a conduit for mentorship and philanthropy.
