A New Era for the Spartan Defense
Michigan State will kick off the 2025 season on Friday night against Toledo at Spartan Stadium, with the game slated for 8 p.m.
After finishing 4-8 last year, the Spartans tightened up in the final four games, cutting yards allowed to 332.8 and points to 16.8, a stark contrast to the 410‑yard, 27.8‑point stretch early in the season, and they sit 14th in the Big Ten for total defense at 378.7 yards per game in 2025.
Defensive coordinator Joe Rossi, who previously coordinated at Minnesota, said the unit will ‘play their [expletive] off’ in the opener, emphasizing an aggressive approach that he believes will set the tone for the year.
Head coach Pat Fitzgerald retained Rossi, praising his meticulous attention to detail and the way his scheme meshes with Fitzgerald’s own philosophy, which he refined while at Northwestern.
The defense returns key veterans such as Jordan Hall, Nikai Martinez and Ben Roberts, while also integrating eight newcomers across additional positions, giving the group a blend of experience and fresh talent.
Rossi noted that each season is independent because of roster changes, yet the steady progress builds belief and resolve among the players, a narrative that has guided the Spartans through recent challenges.
Training camp has been deliberately game‑like, with coaches emphasizing realistic scenarios to sharpen execution before the Toledo showdown.
Pat Fitzgerald’s defensive philosophy combines disciplined gap control with aggressive pursuit, a style that reflects his background and the collaborative effort with Rossi and a co‑defensive coordinator, allowing the veteran to focus on overall coordination while other coaches implement a deliberate, game‑like training approach.
With the season opener looming, the Spartans hope the renewed confidence and cohesive unit will translate into stronger performances throughout the Big Ten schedule.
