A new era for Michigan State athletics
Michigan State University announced the hiring of Dan Bartholomae as its new athletic director, a move intended to bring stability after a period of rapid turnover in the department's leadership.
Bartholomae arrives from Western Michigan, where he earned a reputation for aggressive fundraising and for delivering tangible successes on the field, including multiple conference banners that had been absent for years.
His appointment follows the arrival of Pat Fitzgerald as head football coach, who has already pledged a championship‑driven philosophy and signed a five‑year, $30 million contract.
Financial pressures and the road ahead
The athletic program is burdened with more than $124 million in debt and a $10 million operating deficit, figures that have haunted the university through a series of scandals and losing seasons.
In addition, the school has pledged up to $5.1 million in buyout money to secure Bartholomae’s services and $32 million to buy out the contract of former coach Jonathan Smith.
Both Fitzgerald and Bartholomae say transparency and long‑term planning will be the foundation of their collaboration, aiming to restore trust among fans, donors and university officials.
Their ultimate goal is to transform the football team into a consistent winner, a shift they believe will generate the revenue needed to stabilize the department’s finances and re‑establish Michigan State as a power in the Big Ten.
