The College Sports Communicators (CSC) At-Large Academic All-America program has once again placed Michigan State hockey at the forefront of collegiate achievement, recognizing two of its most distinguished defenders for their combined scholarly and athletic performance.

Matt Basgall earned first‑team honors and was crowned the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, a testament to his leadership as team captain and his statistical impact that placed him seventh on the squad in points and tied for the most points among defensemen with Maxim Strbak. His 39 blocked shots ranked second on the team, illustrating a relentless commitment to defensive responsibility.
Trey Augustine, meanwhile, secured second‑team accolades and added the prestigious Mike Richter Award to his résumé, given to the nation’s top Division I goaltender. He concluded a standout junior season with a 24‑win record, a .929 save percentage and a 2.11 goals‑against average, guiding the Spartans to a No. 4 national ranking in scoring defense.
Academic Pursuits Behind the accolades
Both athletes maintain rigorous academic schedules that mirror their competitive intensity on the ice. Basgall, a kinesiology major, carries a 3.96 cumulative GPA, while Augustine, pursuing a finance degree, holds a 3.88 GPA.
