A Strong Start to the Season
The Michigan State Spartans entered their Thursday night contest against Eastern Michigan riding a perfect 3-0 record, marking the opening chapter of Big Ten play for the 2026 season. The victory not only preserved their unbeaten start but also reinforced the team's reputation as one of the most formidable forces in Division I women's soccer.
This clash represented the 20th meeting between the Spartans and the Eagles, with the most recent encounter having taken place in 2023. Over the years, Michigan State has built a commanding edge, holding a 15-1-3 advantage in the all-time series and riding a seven-game winning streak against their opponents.
The Spartans now sit among a select group of just 30 Division I programs that have yet to taste defeat or a tie in the first two weeks of the season. Their early dominance is reflected in national recognitions, with the United Soccer Coaches poll ranking them No. 3 and Top Drawer Soccer placing them at No. 4.
Standout performances came from several key contributors. Kennedy Bell, the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, netted two goals in the home-state match at North Carolina, marking her first collegiate home-game heroics. Bella Najera added a free‑kick strike, her 26th career goal, and now sits 12th on Michigan State's all‑time scoring list with 66 points.
Supporting talent shone as well. Kayla Briggs scored the lone goal in the win over Loyola and has logged full 90 minutes in each of her last two appearances. Emerson Sargeant recorded the primary assist on Bell’s second goal at North Carolina, earning her first assist of the season, while Ella Janz contributed two assists across her first three collegiate games.
Goalkeeper Noelle Henning continued her stellar play, conceding only a single goal in three outings, including a penalty save against North Carolina. However, Henning will soon depart to represent the United States at the 2026 U20 Women’s World Cup in Poland, a move that will test the depth of the Spartans' defensive lineup.
