Michigan State University’s hockey program has confirmed the addition of forward Diego Johnson, who will slot into the roster spot vacated by Nikita Klepov. Johnson, a junior prospect from the Western Hockey League, brings a blend of size, skill and experience that coaches say fits the Spartans’ aggressive style.
The 20‑year‑old was originally slated to play for the University of Connecticut in the 2027‑28 season, but he elected to forfeit that commitment and instead sign with the Spartans after Klepov’s departure. In 68 games for the Penticton Vees, Johnson recorded 46 points — 25 goals and 21 assists — while posting a plus‑25 on‑ice rating, numbers that have drawn attention from several collegiate programs.
Johnson’s move comes after Klepov inked an entry‑level contract with the Anaheim Ducks, a decision that cost the Russian forward his NCAA eligibility. Because of age restrictions, Klepov must now return to the Canadian Hockey League if he fails to make the Ducks’ roster, underscoring the high stakes of the transition for both players.
The Spartans’ roster now stands at 26 skaters, a lineup that includes 17 draft‑eligible players and nine first‑round selections, highlighting the program’s continued emphasis on talent acquisition. Johnson will become the eighth CHL alum to wear the green and white, joining three former CHL players from the previous season.
Beyond the statistical contributions, Johnson’s chemistry with fellow forward Ryker Lee — who captured Rookie of the Year honors on the Madison Capitols of the USHL — could prove pivotal. The two previously shared the ice in junior hockey, and their familiarity may accelerate the team’s cohesion as they prepare for another NCAA tournament run.
Last season, Michigan State edged UConn 2‑1 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, a victory that added momentum to the program. With Johnson now in the fold, the team hopes to build on that momentum and push deeper into the championship bracket.
