Michigan State’s men’s soccer team opened its season with a convincing 4‑1 victory over Niagara on Sunday, snapping a three‑game winless streak and improving to 4‑0 for the first time since 2017.
Four Scorers, Four Assists: A Balanced Attack
The Spartans spread the scoring across four different players, each finding the net in a display of unselfish offense. Conner O'Keefe opened the scoring in the 24th minute, finishing a pass from Richie Ludwig, while Peter Soudan added his second goal of the season in the 31st minute, assisted by Andrew Darakdjian. Luke Spadafora struck early in the second half, and Leo Conneh capped the scoring in the 60th minute, both with assists from Ludwig and Soudan respectively.
Coach Damon Rensing praised the team’s cohesion, noting that the side’s willingness to share the ball was as important as the final tally. ‘We wanted to keep the pressure on and make sure everyone got involved,’ Rensing said after the match, highlighting the unselfish play that defined the performance.
Despite a rugged contest that produced 34 fouls — 20 drawn by Niagara and 14 by the Spartans — Michigan State maintained composure and outshot the visitors 21‑5. The next test will be a home matchup against Pitt on Thursday, September 3 at 7 p.m., a game that will serve as the first meeting of the season for both programs.
The win also underscored the program’s depth, with contributions from a mix of veterans and newcomers, and it sets a positive tone as the team looks to build momentum heading into conference play.
