Michigan State University has mapped out a series of official visits for its 2027 basketball recruiting class, aiming to bring some of the nation’s most coveted prospects to East Lansing.
A Missed Opportunity
Among those targets was Asa Montgomery, a 6‑foot‑7 small forward who ranks among the top thirty players nationally. The Spartans extended an offer to Montgomery, signaling a clear interest in adding a versatile wing to the roster.
However, Montgomery never set foot on the campus for an official visit. While eight other programs received confirmation of scheduled trips, Michigan State was absent from that list, leaving the coaching staff without the anticipated in‑person evaluation.
Coach Tom Izzo, who has built his program on close relationships and hands‑on recruitment, responded by intensifying outreach to other prospects, emphasizing the need to fill the wing spots that have become a priority for the team’s depth.
The missed visit underscores the challenges of high‑stakes recruiting, where a single uncommitted player can shift the balance of a class, prompting the Spartans to pivot quickly and explore alternative avenues.
