Last season the Spartans’ defense struggled, surrendering an average of 29.9 points per game, a figure that placed them near the bottom of the Big Ten.
A New Coaching Era
Enter Pat Fitzgerald, who returned to his alma mater as head coach, and defensive coordinator Joe Rossi, both tasked with reshaping the unit’s identity and instilling a more aggressive mindset.
The program responded by adding 14 transfers on the defensive side of the ball, a move designed to inject talent and depth where the roster was thin.
Roles Defined for Key Players
Redshirt freshman Derrick Simmons will anchor the defensive line, providing depth behind projected starters Ben Roberts and Eli Coenen.
Devin Vaught, a transfer from the University of Maine, is expected to assume the strong safety spot, bringing size and ball‑hawking ability to the secondary.
Kenny Soares Jr., formerly of N.C. State, will line up as a rush end, a hybrid role that blends linebacker instincts with defensive end pass‑rush duties.
Vaught will not be alone in the secondary; free safety Nikai Martinez, one of the Spartans’ most reliable defenders, is slated to offer support and stability in the backfield.
Challenges Ahead
Coach Rossi emphasized that while the talent influx is promising, the defensive line depth remains a question mark, especially with only three proven interior linemen heading into fall practice.
The coaching staff believes that the blend of experience and fresh legs will allow the defense to be more aggressive and better compete in the upcoming schedule.
