A Recruiting Surge in Ann Arbor
Michigan is shaping a promising 2027 recruiting class, already boasting eleven verbal pledges. Among the prospects generating the most excitement is Darius Johnson, a four-star defensive back who ranks No. 35 among cornerbacks nationwide.
At six feet one inch and 160 pounds, Johnson combines height with fluid athleticism, traits that have long appealed to secondary coaches. Michigan’s staff has been courting him since his early days at BYU, where his breakout performances first drew attention.
A Recruiting Trip That Stood Out
During his latest visit to Michigan, Johnson toured the campus, met with players, and soaked in the game-day atmosphere. He described the environment as ‘electric’ and said the coaching staff made him feel ‘like family.’
The visit coincided with a series of conversations with defensive backs coach Jernaro Gilford, who was the first to offer Johnson when he was at BYU. Their rapport has only deepened, and Johnson has repeatedly praised the Wolverines’ culture.
Predictions Point to Michigan
While Johnson has not set an official commitment date, recruiting analysts consistently rank Michigan as the favorite. Competing schools such as UCLA, Oregon and Oklahoma remain in the mix, but the balance of momentum currently tilts toward Ann Arbor.
If Johnson signs, his addition would reinforce a secondary that is already among the most talented in the class. The commitment would also underscore the Wolverines’ ability to attract top defensive talent despite a crowded national landscape.
