The University of Michigan's basketball program capped a record-breaking season with a national championship, finishing with 37 wins and just three losses. The Wolverines' dominance was underscored by a historic draft that saw multiple players selected among the NBA's top prospects.
Among the standouts, guard Roddy Gayle Jr. and sharpshooter Nimari Burnett signed exhibit-10 contracts with the Toronto Raptors and Detroit Pistons respectively, positioning them for potential two-way deals or G-League opportunities. Both players were instrumental in the team's title run, with Gayle Jr. earning the moniker "March Roddy" for his postseason heroics, including a 16-point burst against Alabama.
Gayle Jr., who transferred from Ohio State before the previous season, averaged 7.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists while delivering clutch performances in the tournament. Burnett, a three-point specialist, shot 37.5% from deep en route to an 8.2-point average and contributed 2.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game. Their complementary skill sets highlighted the depth that helped Michigan set program records for wins and low loss count.
The draft also featured forward Morez Johnson Jr., big man Yaxel Lendeborg and prospect Aday Mara, marking the first time the Wolverines have had three lottery picks in a single NBA Draft. Their selections followed a lineage of Michigan alumni who have successfully transitioned to the NBA, from Nik Stauskas and Mitch McGary to Glenn Robinson III, Rumeal Robinson, Loy Vaught, Terry Mills and others.
As training camps open, Gayle Jr. and Burnett will vie for roster spots alongside veterans such as Dusty May, LJ Cason and Will Tschetter, while coaches like Dusty May and Juwan Howard oversee the next chapter.
