The Michigan Wolverines opened their 2026 season at Michigan Stadium, stepping onto the field under new defensive coordinator Kyle Whittingham and facing the Western Michigan Broncos in a highly anticipated home opener.
Season Opener Highlights
From the first snap, Michigan’s defense asserted itself, with linebacker Jay Hill directing a unit that logged 12 tackles and two sacks, while defensive end Troy Bowles added two tackles for loss and defensive back Dom Nichols contributed 9 tackles, 2.5 for loss, 1.5 sacks and two quarterback hits.
However, the offense stumbled early. Quarterback Bryce Underwood missed a snap and fumbled a punt return, and a subsequent illegal formation penalty stalled the second drive, leaving the Wolverines scrambling for rhythm.
The turning point came when Underwood launched a desperate Hail Mary that found JJ Buchanan in the end zone, sparking a brief surge of hope before the Wolverines’ momentum evaporated.
In the second half, Michigan’s drives stalled repeatedly, gaining only 17, 2, 6, 1 and 25 yards before Underwood was intercepted with nine seconds remaining, allowing Western Michigan to kick a field goal and seal the victory.
Western Michigan’s offense, limited to 89 passing yards but 132 rushing yards, sustained a 13‑minute, 40‑second drive in the second half, converting multiple first downs and pressuring the Michigan defense throughout.
The loss, considered embarrassing given Michigan’s talent pool, has ignited concerns about the trajectory of the season, especially with a marquee matchup against the Oklahoma Sooners looming on the horizon.
