Michigan football heads into the 2026 season with a notably deep edge rusher rotation, capable of fielding as many as seven players on the defensive front in the season opener.
A Deep, Versatile Edge Rusher Group
Defensive coordinator Jay Hill has called the group one of the deepest on the roster, pointing to five individuals who have made significant progress this fall: Dom Nichols, Chase Taylor, Troy Bowles, Nathaniel Staehling and cornerback Shamari Earls, while also emphasizing the contributions of John Henry Daley and Cam Brandt.
Dom Nichols, whose pass‑rushing skill set has drawn consistent praise, has returned from a minor injury and is expected to anchor the edge rush, a point underscored by Blake Frazier, who noted that Nichols will make life difficult for opposing tackles.
John Henry Daley, the All‑American transfer from Utah, is fully cleared after a ruptured Achilles repair and is projected to be at full speed, having added strength and speed during his rehabilitation, giving the defense a potent pass‑rush option.
Behind the top three, Nate Marshall, Benny Patterson and freshman Tariq Boney form the next tier of edge rushers, with Boney showing notable progress early in his collegiate career, while the coaching staff continues to monitor the development of the entire group.
The depth and versatility of the rotation will be on display when Michigan hosts Western Michigan at The Big House for the 2026 season opener, offering fans a first‑look at a defensive unit that could be a catalyst for success throughout the campaign.
