Midland Valley Basketball Embraces New Identity Under Coach Abia Williams

A young squad fights to defy expectations in a challenging Region 5-AAAA

A Fresh Coaching Vision

Midland Valley’s boys’ basketball program is undergoing a cultural shift as new head coach Abia Williams takes the reins, emphasizing fundamentals and defensive pressure to redefine the team’s identity.

The Mustangs are currently working with a younger group of players, many of whom are focusing on football during the summer, which has forced the coaching staff to rely on fresh talent and adapt quickly.

Young Talent Rising

A glimpse of that resilience emerged in the summer league game against Evans on June 9, where Midland Valley fought back to within three points of a tie, showcasing a fighting spirit that could translate into the regular season.

Freshmen Thomas Lee, Kenny Eberheart and Karon Hall have been stepping up, providing energy and skill that belies their age, while upperclassmen such as junior Cam Gleaton and senior Xavier Geter are poised to bring leadership once the football season concludes.

A Region of Powerhouses

The road ahead is anything but easy. Region 5‑AAAA features defending state champions North Augusta and strong programs like Fox Creek and Irmo, making every matchup a test of mettle.

Williams, who previously coached in the same region at Silver Bluff, knows the competition well and remains confident that the Mustangs can exceed expectations in his first season.

Last year the team finished 19‑9, collecting victories over South Aiken, Gilbert and Brookland‑Cayce, a foundation that Williams believes can be built upon with the current roster.

Adding to the narrative, girls’ basketball coach Chasen Redd stepped in during the playoffs and brings a history of success at Silver Bluff, underscoring the broader support network within the school’s athletic department.
