Midnight Soccer Lights Up the Five Boroughs
New York City is turning its parks into late‑night soccer arenas as part of the NYC Open Play program. Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that free, all‑night pickup games will be held at one illuminated field in each borough, running through July 18, 2026, the final day of the FIFA World Cup 2026. The effort is timed to coincide with the global tournament, using the excitement of the World Cup to foster community engagement.
The five participating sites span the city’s diverse neighborhoods: Hudson River Park’s Chelsea Waterside in Manhattan, Astoria Park in Queens, Calvert Vaux Park in Brooklyn, Soundview Park in the Bronx, and Fairview Park on Staten Island. Each location will host up to three 7‑versus‑7 pitches equipped with cones, goals and soccer balls, allowing players to drop in individually or join a team.
Organizers from the NYC Footy soccer league will rotate teams and tailor games to different skill levels, ensuring that newcomers and seasoned players alike can find a match. Participants can sign up via nycopenplay.com, where they can register solo or as part of a group. Games are scheduled to begin as early as 10:30 p.m. and can extend until 8 a.m., taking full advantage of the illuminated fields.
Safety is a top priority. Security guards and Parks Enforcement Patrol officers will be stationed at each site to maintain order and assist players. The presence of city staff underscores the program’s aim to provide a secure, welcoming environment for late‑night recreation.
City Parks Commissioner Tricia Shimamura expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, highlighting how the program blends sport with community building. Noreen Doyle, President and CEO of the Hudson River Park Trust, echoed the sentiment, praising the collaboration that brings free soccer to waterfront spaces. Becky Blatt, East Coast Cities Lead for StubHub, added that the sponsor is proud to support increased access to live events and neighborhood activities.
The program’s partners include New York City FC, which will lend its expertise and resources to one field each weekend, and StubHub, the official sponsor that is helping fund the effort. Together, these entities hope to showcase how major sports brands can invest in grassroots community projects while the city prepares to host global soccer fans during the 2026 World Cup.
