A new era of player development
University of Michigan head coach Mike Boynton Jr. unveiled Dylan Murphy as the program’s newest assistant coach on August 3, marking a strategic addition to the Wolverines’ staff. Boynton emphasized Murphy’s proven ability to nurture talent and align with the team’s long‑term vision.
Murphy arrives after a three‑year stint as head coach of the Osceola Magic, the NBA G League affiliate of the Orlando Magic. Under his guidance the club captured three consecutive Eastern Conference No. 1 playoff seeds, a feat that underscored his capacity to build winning cultures.
A record of excellence
During his tenure, Murphy was named NBA G League Coach of the Month in March 2025 after steering the Magic to an 11‑3 stretch. He also coached 2024 G League MVP Mac McClung and helped both McClung and Lester Quinones earn first‑team All‑NBA G League honors. Nine players under his supervision earned NBA call‑ups, reflecting his direct impact on professional pathways.
Murphy’s coaching journey also includes five seasons within the Orlando Magic organization, a championship‑winning period with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, and a role as an NBA Development League scout for the Atlanta Hawks. Prior to that, he honed his craft as a graduate assistant at Ball State.
What this means for Michigan
Boynton highlighted Murphy’s player development skills as a perfect match for the Wolverines’ aspirations. The hire follows eight years of Murphy’s involvement with the Orlando Magic, where he wore multiple hats, suggesting a deep reservoir of basketball acumen that should translate well to the collegiate setting.
The addition of Murphy is expected to enrich Michigan’s recruiting pitches, especially for prospects who value a clear pathway to professional basketball. His background in the G League offers players a unique perspective on the professional transition, a narrative that could prove attractive on the recruiting trail.
