Mike Boynton Jr. Takes the Helm of Michigan Men’s Basketball

After Dusty May's exit for the NBA, the Wolverines appoint an experienced coach to lead the program forward.

A New Direction for Michigan Basketball

Michigan announced this week that Mike Boynton Jr. will serve as the next head coach of its men’s basketball program, stepping into the role after Dusty May accepted an NBA position with the Dallas Mavericks.

Boynton, who had been an assistant with the Wolverines since 2024, was thrust into the interim role when May departed, and the university’s athletic director confirmed his promotion to permanent head coach.

A Proven Track Record

May’s tenure was marked by a historic season in which the Wolverines posted a school‑record 37 victories and captured their first championship since 1989, finishing with a 64‑13 record over the past two years.

Boynton’s coaching résumé includes a stint as head coach at Oklahoma State from 2017 to 2024 and previous assistant positions at Coastal Carolina, Wofford College, the University of South Carolina and Stephen F. Austin State University, giving him a breadth of experience across different programs.

Looking Forward

Warde Manuel, the athletic director, emphasized that Boynton’s leadership will be crucial in maintaining competitive edge and fostering a culture of excellence, noting that the new coach inherits a program poised for continued success.
