Mike Curtis Joins Memphis Grizzlies, Luke Toburen Takes UVA Helm

A veteran strength coach moves to the NBA while a trusted aide steps into a leadership role at the University of Virginia.

A Strategic Shift in Player Development

Mike Curtis, a former University of Virginia basketball player who later spent nearly two decades shaping the Cavaliers' strength program, is set to bring his expertise to the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies. The franchise announced that Curtis will assume the role of head of health and player performance, a move that follows his recent departure from UVA.

Curtis's journey in basketball spans both the collegiate and professional ranks. He played for the Cavaliers from 1994 to 1998, returned to Charlottesville as a graduate assistant, and eventually rose to lead the university's strength and conditioning efforts for the past 17 years. Prior to his UVA tenure, he served as the Grizzlies' head strength and conditioning coach from 2002 to 2008, giving him a rare blend of college and NBA experience.

His move coincides with the presence of another former Cavalier in the Memphis roster. Ty Jerome, who helped lead Virginia to a national championship before embarking on an NBA career, is now a member of the Grizzlies, adding a familiar face to Curtis's new environment.

In response to Curtis's departure, the University of Virginia has named Luke Toburen as the new director of sports performance for its men's basketball program. Toburen, who spent the last four seasons at Longwood University under Griff Aldrich, brings a deep familiarity with the Cavaliers' culture. He previously served as a graduate assistant under Curtis from 2020 to 2022, during which time he earned a master's degree in exercise physiology from UVA in 2022.

Toburen said he is eager to return to a program he knows well and contribute to its continued success. Ryan Odom, a longtime observer of the Cavaliers' coaching staff, praised Toburen's grasp of UVA's standards and his ability to connect with players, calling him a natural fit for the role.

Curtis himself spoke highly of Toburen, highlighting his skills and the advantage of his insider perspective. The transition reflects a strategic effort to blend institutional knowledge with fresh energy as both the university and the NBA franchise look ahead.
